Featured article update

We now have a new featured article on the main page. As you know, I have been trying to figure out a way to change the way we select a featured article to get more participation and to make it easier to pick one.

After basically ignoring it for the last two months while I concentrated on other things, it looks like my first impression was correct. Using a poll will make it easier. The three open nominations will be what we vote on and a winner picked from those. Looking at the calendar, we probably should run this poll through the end of June so that everyone has more than just two weeks to vote.

In order to make this work, we will need people to nominate new articles ahead of time, just like we do with pictures, quotes, songs and the "Did You Know"s. We will need at least three articles to choose from on each poll.

A featured article is supposed to be one of our best efforts to display to everyone when the go to the main page. I think the way to keep us on that track is to have someone second the nomination. It won't have to be as formal as the current voting is. It just needs to be an indication that another person looked over the nomination and agrees that it's in good shape. Some pages are going to be nominated solely because someone likes Ferb, for example, but we can cut back on some of that.

Another way to think of it is an extension of what we already do. We have people who check the Wiki Activity and Recent Changes pages to see what others have changed. Some edits are okay while others need to be changed back. Seconding an article nomination is like saying "that looks good, let's go for it". If the article isn't quite ready, then we have time to improve it so it will be.

104 Daze of Summer

by RRabbit42

On one of the first Phineas and Ferb calendars in 2011, May 20th was designated as the first of the "104 Daze of Summer". Since that day has come around again, I have made a small change to our wiki's theme to help celebrate the time when spring changes into summer. The green triangles will stay up until... whenever we decide to put something else up. Anyone want to take a shot at doing a red, white and blue background for July 4th?

Very soon, summer vacation will officially start. It's a great time, as the song says, to make every minute count, jump up, jump in and seize the day, and to make sure that in every single possible way, that each day will be a great day.

RRabbit42's pocket flower bed

One way of doing that is to get out and try something new. For me, since I have a new house, I'm doing something I haven't done in about 30 years: taking care of a yard. This year is is going to be spent on small things, just to get used to being outside more often.

One of those small things was to take a couple spots in my yard that I couldn't mow or trim with the weed trimmer and converting them into pocket flower beds. I have no idea how well this is going to turn out and I don't know how long those flowers will last. But it's better than letting that space go to waste.

Two years ago, we started the 104 activities for 104 days of summer forum. We're just barely over 60% of the way to filling it out. Phineas and Ferb aren't the only creative kids out there, or adults, for that matter. Everyone can come up with something great to do and we can reach the 104 activities mark.

Need to be mature? Fake it.

by RRabbit42

Since part of the theme of this newsletter is trying something new, it's appropriate to look at two Season 2 episodes where several of the characters also tried something new.

We're going to search

"The Lizard Whisperer" is an episode where Phineas and Ferb get a new pet, a chameleon they name Steve. Steve had wandered by, looking for food, and found mushrooms more to his liking than frozen yogurt.

Meanwhile, Jeremy stops at the first of his two appointments to teach guitar lessons and it's at Doofenshmirtz Evil, Incorporated. Dr. Doofenshmirtz found some ancient Egpytian sheet music that he's convinced will summon aliens from outer space to do his bidding, but he needs guitar lessons to play it. Vanessa wanders by, but when she learns that Jeremy doesn't share her musical interests, she loses interest in him pretty quickly. Following some bad advice by Dr. D, Jeremy accidentally zaps Steve with the Gigant-inator.

As Steve grows to 40 feet tall and begins wandering through downtown Danville, Phineas, Ferb and Isabella go in search of him, and Ferb gives his famous inspirational speech, the longest continuous speech of the entire series.

Dr. Doofenshmirtz gets good enough to master the sheet music and the aliens arrive, but separate actions by Steve and Agent P send the aliens back to outer space. The day is saved and Jeremy can go on to his next appointment, which is giving Major Monogram lessons.

Candace being mature

It's a rare event when Phineas and Ferb are not sure what they want to do for the day, so they ask Isabella what they should do. She suggests getting help for the Fireside Girls to get their Rodeo Clown Patches. And the obvious way to do that is by building mechanical bulls and have a "Robot Rodeo".

Upstairs in the house, Candace is really excited to go see Tiny Cowboy, but Stacy can't go because her mom things Candace is too flighty. They come up with a plan: Candace will fake being mature, which she hasn't done before, though she did fake being Irish for a week. Step 1 is wearing fake glasses because "nothing says real focus like fake glasses".

Elsewhere in Danville, L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. is having a convention to see who will win the Inator Creator contest and get the belt for the year. Dr. Doofenshmirtz isn't having much luck coming up with anything, but realizes that if he sets the Agents free that had been captured, it will buy him more time to finish an Inator. Which he does, by having it destroy Rodney's Inator. The only prize that's available is a red balloon, and that leads to some pain for the bad doctor.

Back at the house, Candace has been doing her best to remain mature, but can't overcome her urge to bust her brothers. Luckily, Dr. Hirano decides that Candace's efforts were a kind of maturity and she let's Stacy go to the concert.

Of the two episodes, I like "Robot Rodeo" a bit better, mainly because it shows Isabella standing back to let her team earn the patches and because of the song that plays at the end of the episode, Izzy's Got the Frizzies. But I do also appreciate the reference to Jurassic Park that was in "The Lizard Whisperer". It's a subtle reference that you have to be watching closely to catch. Good shows reward their audience for paying attention, as Phineas and Ferb did in both episodes.

Coming in two weeks:
  • Hands-on with the New Merchandise
  • Recent episodes review
  • Other articles to be determined (submissions wanted - send to RRabbit42 or use the Newsletter submissions page)
