The third season of Phineas and Ferb is comprised of sixty-two episodes divided into thirty-five half-hours, which originally aired from March 4, 2011 to November 30, 2012 on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The season continues the adventures of Phineas and Ferb as they make the best of their summer vacation, while Candace tries to "bust" them for it, and Perry fights the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz.
The season was officially announced in June 2009 after being teased since April. It started production in 2010, with Jay Lender and Robert F. Hughes heading it as the primary directors. It debuted with Platypus Day; the kick off event signaled the series' transition into a franchise. During its run, a television movie was developed, and many more promotions occurred.
Highlights of the season include a birthday clip show, a soccer-centered escapade, two Halloween episodes, a Christmas show, scenarios of different eras, the sequel to the alien adventure, a two-part cliffhanger event, and a retrospective clip show.
Production[]
The season was teased by series creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh in a few interviews since April 12, 2009.[1][2] News of this began appearing on June 7, 2009,[3] and a press release was issued two days later on June 9 confirming it.[4]
Production began in 2010.[5] Most of the crew was mantained, with Robert F. Hughes and Jay Lender continuing to direct episodes. Past director Zac Moncrief worked as storyboard supervisor, though he still led one episode. Like with the previous season, Povenmire and Marsh only directed a couple of special episodes; Povenmire also headed a regular segment. Scott Peterson was kept as head writer, and Martin Olson, Jim Bernstein, and Jon Colton Barry joined him as staff writers.
As with the last two seasons, story artists were divided into teams of two, with each team working in a different episode. Duos for the season include Bernie Petterson/Michael Diederich, Kaz Prapuolenis/Kim Roberson, Aliki Theofilopoulos/Antoine Guilbaud, Jon Colton Barry/Kyle Menke, and Chong Lee/Mike Milo.[6] The animation was mainly outsourced to Synergy Animation and Wang Film Productions' subsidiary Hong Ying Animation, with the latter's main studio and Rough Draft Studios providing additional services for the first episodes of the season.
Initial guest stars for the season were revealed on February 15, 2011 along with the announcement of its premiere.[7] Among the names listed were 30 Rock creator Tina Fey, Wall Street lead Michael Douglas, Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox, and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Other guests were unveiled as the episodes were announced, adding names such as singer Kelly Clarkson,[8] and actors Christian Slater and Ray Liotta.[9][10]
The season debuted as part of a then-new annual event titled Platypus Day.[7] With this, Disney began highlighting the show as one of its principal brands, having separate websites for each event with various activites. On the main Disney.com page, a site dedicated to the franchise was set up a few months later.[11] Following the series' transition into a property, several more products were fabricated and a live stage show entered production.[12]
Throughout the first half of 2011, much of the attention turned to the upcoming television movie, which was slated for the summer. As Season 3 progressed, hype started to be built for the movie, with teasers shown in between broadcasts and trailers released every so often. Marketing spanned the entire summer in conjunction with the current season; a themed bus was featured in addition to other merchandise.[13] The enormous success of the movie prompted Disney to further capitalize on the series, ordering a fourth season and pushing development for a feature film.[14]
2011 ended with new holiday episodes for Halloween and Christmas. To begin 2012, a weekend-long event centered around adventures in different eras was held in January.[15] The following month, Perry gained a music number for Platypus Day, which had evolved into a multi-platform promotion.[16] The dance was performed by multiple Disney stars in music videos, solidifying the series' place among the company's most popular brands.
The platypus-themed festivities led into a summer event, confirmed on March 12 to be about the two-part cliffhanger episode.[17] This was marked by an IP expansion, adding a mobile game, an interactive attraction, and new licensees at retail, along with a second tour of the themed bus and a third collection DVD.[18] In the fall, another experience was added at the Disney Parks.[19]
During Season 3, an animation masterclass with creators Povenmire and Marsh was organized in the UK under the Aim High program.[20] Through the initiative, British-exclusive guests came to appear in some of the last episodes of the season,[21][22] which concluded with a retrospective clip show on November 2, 2012, and an atypical eye-only story on November 30.[23]
Title sequence changes from Season 2[]
The title sequence remains the same, but images from "Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You!", "Ain't No Kiddie Ride", "Spa Day", "Tip of the Day", "Wizard of Odd", "Hide and Seek", "The Baljeatles", and "Atlantis" replace the ones from Season 1. The Halloween special shows the title sequence and remains the same, but uses images from "The Monster of Phineas-n-Ferbenstein", "One Good Scare Ought to Do It!", and the Original Pitch.
The calendar's June and the nano bots' "Hello" are both in Spanish in the Latin American version.
