The second season of Phineas and Ferb is comprised of sixty-five episodes divided into thirty-nine half-hours, which originally aired from February 19, 2009 to February 11, 2011 on Disney XD and Disney Channel. The season continues the adventures of Phineas and Ferb as they make the best of their summer vacation, while Candace tries to "bust" them for it, and Perry fights the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz.
The season was officially announced in April 2008, with additional episodes ordered in July. It started production shortly after its unveiling, with Robert F. Hughes, Zac Moncrief, and Jay Lender heading it as the primary directors. A sneak peek of the season aired on Toon Disney in January 2009, leading up to the formal premiere a month later on Disney XD, where episodes would first debut until summer 2010. During its run, various events were held in multiple platforms, boosting the series' recognition to a franchise level.
Highlights of the season include an alien adventure, the continuation of the time travel escapade, the series' first musical clip show, an episode with two POVs, a Christmas special, a superhero story, the first one-hour special, a Wizard of Oz parody, and the musical reenactment of the pilot.
Production[]
Seeing the success of the series in the first quarter of 2008, in which it became the number one animated show for kids and tweens, Disney decided to order a second season of twenty-six half-hours, unveiling it at the upfront presentation to advertisers on April 9, 2008.[1] On July 27, 2008, thirteen half-hours were added to the order, bringing the season to thirty-nine episodes.[2]
Production began soon after the season's announcement. Some changes were made to the crew, with animation director Robert F. Hughes being promoted to episode director, and Scott Peterson taking over as head writer from Martin Olson, who continued as a writer. Along with Hughes, Zac Moncrief and new crew member Jay Lender leaded the episodes' direction; series creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh assisted them in a few occasions. Story artist Jon Colton Barry and writers May Chan and Jennifer Keene joined Peterson and Olson as staff writers.
This season saw many guest writers pitching storyline ideas. Names included the duos Bill Motz & Bob Roth and Devin Bunje & Nick Stanton, and Chelsea Lately panelist Jen Kirkman.[3] As with the first season, story artists were divided into teams of two, with each team working in a different episode. Duos for the season include Jon Colton Barry/Piero Piluso, Joe Orrantia/Mike Roth, Antoine Guilbaud/Kim Roberson, Sherm Cohen/Chong Lee, and Michael Diederich/Perry Zombolas.[3] In addition to Wang Film Productions and Rough Draft Studios, the animation was outsourced to a third studio, Synergy Animation.
With the complementary ordering, early guest stars for the season were revealed. Among the names listed were Falcon Crest star Lorenzo Lamas, High School Musical lead Corbin Bleu, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show actress Cloris Leachman.[2] More names were added alongside the unveiling of Season 3 on June 9, 2009, including then-Disney stars Jennifer Stone and Moisés Arias.[4] Later featured guests included couple Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor;[5] singers Clay Aiken and Chaka Khan; and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.[6]
A preview of the season was confirmed on January 18, 2009 via a promo[7] to be aired on Toon Disney on the 23rd of that month as part of a weekend-long marathon,[7] after being listed in the schedule since early January.[8] A few weeks later, on February 2, it was announced that new episodes would premiere on Disney XD starting on February 16 to kick off the second season.[9]
Throughout 2009, the series' popularity grew further. To test the waters for possible franchising, an event was held around the musical clip show that had been in production, inviting viewers to vote for their favorite songs from the first season amongst a select amount.[10] This proved to be a massive success,[11] prompting Disney to begin promoting the show to a franchise ahead of its next event.
A month after the clip show's debut, on November 12, a multi-platform promotion plan for the upcoming Christmas special was showcased, which included a podcast, the premiere of the new holiday songs on Radio Disney, and a showing of the episode on ABC Family.[12] With the ratings hit of the series' recent events, Disney sought to advertise it as a mainstream brand in 2010, a move news outlets referred to as "making the next SpongeBob".[13]
In the first half of 2010, the show gained its own internet PSA, and was the center of an online event related to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, all the while Season 2 was progressing. During the summer, the series was the spotlight of Disney, giving the theme of the channel's promotion It's On, having its own summer-long sandbox game, and getting the center of attention for its upcoming first hour-long special. Having been announced on July 2, 2010 in an online promo by Disney XD, the special had a multi-platform marketing unveiled on July 14.[6] Following the summer event, episodes began to premiere on Disney Channel again.
Finishing 2010, an extended edition of the Christmas special was revealed on October 29 to premiere on December 3,[14] along with a brand-new interstitial series,[15] which was to air in tandem with the current and next seasons. The second season concluded in 2011 with a musical version of the show's pilot on January 29,[16] initially slated on the 28th;[17] and two episodes revolving around Candace on February 11.
Title sequence changes[]
For Season 1, the images that appear behind Phineas and Ferb while they are dancing were from the Original Pitch. For Season 2, these were changed to pictures from the Season 1 episodes. Starting with the episode "Don't Even Blink", as the camera zooms in on Phineas as he is sitting under the tree at the beginning of the title sequence, he is smiling.

Background Information[]
- Phineas' voice has deepened even more in this season compared to the latter half of Season 1.
- This season marks the first appearance of Irving.
- Disney typically considers a half-hour broadcast to be a single episode, while this wiki counts individual titles as an episode.
- As of March 8, 2011, sixty-five individual episodes have been broadcast in the United States (six 22-minute episodes, one 44-minute episode, one 34-minute episode, and 54 11-minute episodes), bringing the total number of half-hours aired to 39.
- The following episodes are counted in the 39 episodes for Season 2, as they are considered special broadcasts that are separate from the season. They are included in the above totals:
- "Phineas and Ferb Musical Cliptastic Countdown" — Counted as a Season 2 episode; it is counted as one episode since it is a half-hour broadcast, using the Disney definition.
- "Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation!" — Counted as a Season 2 episode; it is counted as one episode, using the Disney definition. It is paired with "S'Winter" and sometimes with "Toy to the World" to fill out the hour on the Disney broadcasts, but was trimmed down to 30 minutes for broadcasts on local ABC affiliates.
- "Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You!" — Counted as a Season 2 episode; it is counted as two episodes since it is double the length of a half-hour broadcast, using the Disney definition.
