New Year's Blast Off! is an incremental game based on Phineas and Ferb, released in December 2012.

Plot[]

It's New Year's Eve, so Phineas and Ferb decide to drop a New Year's Ball to celebrate. At first, Phineas thinks of doing it from the roof, but Ferb has a more ambitious idea to set it up on the Moon. The boys build a rocket and head out to the Moon, where they arrive just in time for the countdown. Ten seconds before the new year, they transform the ship into the ball and drop it in high velocity. Afterwards, back on Earth, the brothers ponder their next adventure.

Gameplay[]

The player has to control the ship to reach the Moon. Using the arrow keys, the rocket can be steered left and right, boosted upwards, and slowed down. While flying, obstacles have to be watched out for, as to not destroy the hull by hitting them. In addition to damage, the ship can also stop if it runs out of fuel. Power-ups can be obtained mid-flight to recharge the damage, fuel, and boost meters. To prolong the run for as long as possible, upgrades are available to improve the rocket; these have to be purchased with coins collected during the round.

Beating the story mode, Moon Run, by reaching 50,000 feet unlocks an endless mode, Space Run, in which the player keeps their ship from the former and gains the add-on of a blaster, which can be activated with the spacebar to shoot obstacles. Starting on the Moon, the unlimited flight takes place throughout space, passing by various planets in its path. Progressing in both modes allows the player to earn achievements.

Background Information[]

New Year's Blast Off Off-border

Some parts out of boundaries in the game's code

  • The game is loosely based on the episode "Happy New Year!"; both media were released in tandem with each other.
  • In the intro and the last ending scene, Phineas' shirt is missing the middle stripe.
  • In the intro and ending cutscenes, a few characters and objects are cut off to fit in the borders. These were fully placed at first to be edited later, as revealed in the game's files.
  • The instructions menu only displays the obstacles for the Moon Run. In addition, the blue spaceship has an alien inside, something not present in the actual game.
  • When an upgrade is bought, a brief animation of Phineas pulling a lever in the corner of the screen is played.
  • The pause menu has renders of a front-facing Phineas and a surprised Ferb sticking out.
  • In the ending, sound clips of fireworks and people cheering are played.
  • For the ball to drop from the Moon to the Earth in ten seconds, it must have reached a speed of 38,440 km/s (23,885.5 mi/s).
  • In the space segments, the wind is called solar wind, an actual phenomenon where particles are released from the atmosphere of the Sun.
  • Most of the achievements are alliterative in some way. The exceptions are "Accident Prone", "Maximum Overdrive", "Spaced Out", and "One in a Million". The first refers to accident-proneness, the second alludes to the Stephen King film, the third is a play on the phrase "space out", and the fourth is a reference to the saying of unlikely odds.
New Year's Blast Off Space Run Limit

The sidebar no longer shows the ship after 150,000 feet

  • The planets shown in the Space Run mode are cartoony versions of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, in order. These are the next planets of the Solar System going from the Moon. Additionally, spiral galaxies like the Milky Way can be seen in the background.
    • Each planet is 30 thousand in-game feet away from each other.
    • Oddly, Uranus is a drawn as blue, and Neptune is colored green, when in most cases it is the opposite.
  • In Space Run, when the 150,000 feet mark is passed, the sidebar no longer shows the ship. Instead, it displays an arrow, indicating that the player has gone beyond the regular limits.
