"We're gonna make our own New Year's Ball and drop it from outer space!" — Phineas[src] |
The New Year's Ball is a time sphere built by Phineas and Ferb so as to hold their own ball drop in celebration of the closing eventful year.
History[]
Linda drops her sons off in the Garcia-Shapiro household so that they can participate in the New Year's party for the neighborhood kids, while the grown-ups head to their festivities. Excited, Isabella brings up some of the night's highlights, with Vivian reminding them of the ball drop grand finale. Pondering on the fun of tradition, the boys declare their plan of creating a magnified sphere of their own, and releasing it from outer space, to the unaware cheer of Mrs. Garcia-Shapiro, who leaves the kids for the time being.
Soon afterwards, the gang proceeds with the project, dividing the tasks amongst themselves. In the meantime, Phineas gives the other children present a tour of the interior, during which the unending slide is carelessly tested out by Irving. At the adults' ballroom, Candace's urge overtakes her, pushing her to ditch the event in favor of catching her siblings before her resolution kicks in. She misses a chance because of the ball rising, but is quickly motivated upon learning of its trending live feed.
Returning to City Hall, Candace uses her phone to share the stream with the attending public, showing her brothers' scheme in hopes of garnering the necessary attention. While gauging the awe of the majority, the teenager dashes to drag her mother for an orchestrated bust. Near the year's turn, the boys activate the descent, landing as the countdown ends. A city-wide commemoration of the new epoch ensues, concluding with Ferb's fireworks sphere launch, the sight of which calms his sister ("Happy New Year!").
Design[]
The New Year's Ball is an enormous sphere composed of two multi-tiled hemispheres supported by a gray vertically striped base, and a gray cylindrical post. Accessed through a flexible bottom tile, its interior is a multi-level area encompassing a pink two-cup punchbowl sailing ride, a balloon room filled with regular and animal-shaped crafts, a bed covered by a thousand coats, a yellow infinity symbol slide with two gray entrance ladders in both sides; a cow room, a gift shop space storing several toys, a launch chamber, and a pink-yellow-purple psychedelic disco ballroom.
Mechanics[]
The New Year's Ball is an amusement expanse specially concocted to sustain conditions at levels beyond the atmosphere, being painted with a super-sealer compound impervious to the vacuum of space. Its mast structure is switched on by turning a lever located in the managing chamber, inside of which the participants are properly seated for the astronomical trip. Once the clock strikes midnight, the ball displays a "Happy New Year" message, and exhibits footage of worldwide celebrations. The grand finale has the sphere rocket itself into the sky, combusting in a colored fireworks show.
Background Information[]
- The idea of a ball drop is largely inspired by the real life annual Times Square Ball event.
- According to Isabella, the Garcia-Shapiro home party has noisemakers, balloons, and confetti, in addition to her mother's famous hot chocolate.
- Isabella states that there is a custom of kissing a special someone at midnight, the thought of which causes her to hear Phineas' idea declaration in a suggestive manner.
- The tasks performed by the kids for the ball's formation are:
- Buford initially protests about his work, saying that painting is for babies and beatniks, but complies to Phineas' instructions.
- While the infinity slide does not have a conventional exit, users can jump off from the lower parts to get out of it.
- When Phineas activates the ball, the other kids throw blue, green, and cyan confetti into the air.
- The entire drop is recorded on Irving's podcast, using a camera and a computer linked to an antenna for the video feed. Candace addresses the viewers as people from Internet Land, proclaiming her victory to them, only to be mocked by the webmaster for her countless fails.
- To broadcast the transmission, Candace plugs her cell phone to the City Hall's monitor.
- From the times mentioned, it can be inferred that the New Year's Ball is initiated one hour before midnight, and falls one minute prior to the new year. Assuming that it goes up to the Kármán space boundary of 62 mi (100 km), its ascent and descent speed is 1.03 mi/s (1.67 km/s), just under the hypersonic threshold.
- Aside from the kids' dances, the sphere captures imagery of Clyde and Betty Jo, Reginald and Winifred, Vivian and Mr. Garcia-Shapiro, Stacy and Coltrane, Doofenshmirtz and Perry, and the City Hall stage.
- Ferb responds to his brother's inquiry about the fireworks by sharing his thoughts on the concept of New Year's. Conversely to the "Auld Lang Syne" expression, he believes it to be akin to an unspoiled universe.
- The New Year's Ball is the central object of the game New Year's Blast Off!, wherein players have to take it to the Moon.
