"Oh, hey Candace, glad you're still up, you'll get to see the cool planet coming directly at us. But don't worry, we're building a Giant Spring to bounce it back into space where it came from." — Phineas[src] |
The Giant Spring is a spring built by Phineas and Ferb with their friends' assistance as a means of impeding a planetary clash catastrophe.
History[]
A green laser passes by the Flynn-Fletcher house at night, alarming a relaxing Candace, who tries to point out her siblings as its source. To her dismay, Phineas and Ferb are just messing with a telescope, prompting Linda to remind her of their bust limit agreement, given that an invention had been mentioned earlier. Suspecting further activity from the boys, the sister decides to stay up in order to keep an eye on them, while their friends commend the two for the space exploration sleepover idea.
Upon explaining the projection process, the boys are pressed by Buford to start looking into the galaxies. Clarifying the reason, he recounts his otherwordly meeting with an alien specimen. Not buying it, Baljeet ridicules the bully, even in the face of a photo proof. The kids soon begin controlling the probes, zooming in on the brothers' milkshake bar, and the planet of flamingo hybrids, the sight of which astounds them. Abruptly, the celestial image displays the body growing closer, indicating impending doom.
Baljeet works out the planet's path, figuring out that it will hit the surface by midnight. Intent on saving the world, the group considers possibilities of halting the collision, arriving at a rebounding solution thanks to a comment by Buford. Shortly prior to daybreak, the elastic mold is finished, in time for the expected event. Reaching the spring, the visitor is compressed, allowing the bully to greet his buddy. Afterwards, it bounces back into space with the loose recoiler, before Linda can see it ("When Worlds Collide").
Design[]
The Giant Spring is a huge coil spring formed by a gray spiral structure consisting of a five-screw cylindrical metal base linked to a segmented steel piece by three gray bars. Its shape is achieved by revolving the main body in ten loops, each bigger than the previous.
Mechanics[]
The Giant Spring is a compression spring functioning on stress mechanics. It is able to cushion the fall of significantly large masses, compacting itself in the process so as to exert a counter elastic force to the impacting entity, an action essentially simulating a ricochet.
Background Information[]
- The blurring of the projector's imaging is the catalyst for the gang's notice of a strange phenomenon. At first, it is surmised as a planet enlargement; this is quickly understood as an approaching impact.
- The boys believe that the government scientists are alerting the populace on the occurrence, though in actuality the specialists are freaking out, as depicted by the situation at the North America Planetary Defense Headquarters.
- Learning of the midnight prediction, Buford initially becomes happy by the chance to see his exotic friend, but worries about the destruction after being knocked some sense into by Baljeet.
- Phineas' first idea to prevent the calamity is to use electromagnets, which can only be applied by factoring the target's molecular density, therefore rendering them unfeasible.
- Concerned about his buddy, Buford picks up a pail of water, and prepares a nest in his garage, so that he could take care of the creature until at least spring. This remark on the season ends up as the motivation for the kids' plan.
- From the time shown on Candace's digital clock, it can be inferred that the spring's setup is concluded nine minutes before midnight.
- When Candace is told of the contingency idea, she comments on its less scientific nature, indirectly comparing it to her siblings' normal antics.
- As the planet moves towards the coil, Isabella attempts to hold Phineas' hand in a romantic gesture, only to grab Ferb's instead.
- Linda states that a thirteenth amendment to the busting accord is probably due for inclusion, likely to avoid inconvenient nighttime situations such as that one.
- While it is pushed back, the planet catches the World's Largest Ball of Twine, which unravels all the way to an attracting device, connecting it to the spring. The ball's string pulls the spring alongside the celestial body, thereby causing its disappearance.
