Backyard Defense is a tower defense game based on Phineas and Ferb, developed by MarketJS for the Disney website and app on July 11, 2015. In it, players need to devise resourceful formations with ingenious towers to hamper a monster breach at the Flynn-Fletcher house.

Plot[]

Phineas and Ferb's cherished backyard is suddenly in sight of a hostile horde seemingly scheming to take over their residence, leaving its fate up to the player aided by the brothers. Surviving a handful of monster torrents leads to the discovery of an underlying plot by Dr. Doofenshmirtz, who is presumably desiring to annihilate Perry's dear home behind everyone's backs. Unbeknownst to the doctor, the agent is stealthily helping his owners for the evil tactic's demise from the subterranean shadows.

Gameplay[]

There are fifteen levels in the adventure, as well as a tutorial stage for players to learn the basic mechanics to be applied all over. In each one, select brown patches are dispersed within the overhead layout for placing turret equipment using the star score, both granted in a certain amount at the preparation phase and earnable by beating enemies throughout the action. Gadget weapons have a designated price based on their combat effectiveness, with powerful devices costing further to construct and gaining extra to demolish proportionally.

Once the defenses are set up, the player can commence the protective assault. Foes enter the backyard from the top section of the screen, descending towards the suburban household in multiple waves according to the present formation. Adversary attributes must be worked around with the varied widgets at the disposal to avoid losing health, considering the indicated combinations of bulk and speed. When a surge becomes overwhelming, Phineas and Ferb's special contraptions can be activated for a rapid cleaning, taking twenty seconds to charge.

Background Information[]

  • A number of changes were made from the game's concept draft to the final product; the heart hits became a health bar, the zombies and robots went from generic models to elements from the series, the inventory boxes turned into a selection wheel, the power gauges rerouted to a charge meter, and the Sand Bags, the Weapon Booster engine, and the Firestarter flamethrower wound up dismantled.[3]
  • Within the junctures, the brothers' expression continuously changes in a back-and-forth manner. Phineas has his eyes move from center to front, while Ferb displaces his view from top to bottom and switches among a neutral stance and a sly smile.
  • On the roof, the innovative duo sits on a slope next to a wrench, nine gears, a white blueprint, and red and green screwdrivers representing themselves, reserving the peak space beside an antenna for the player.
  • In the guide stage, the Star Score is only given to the user after the boys suggest planting a turret in one of the available patches.
  • Phineas and Ferb shatter the fourth wall in the tutorial, directly addressing the player in order to teach the game's commands to them.
  • Noticing the approaching zombie mob, Phineas asserts a plan to Ferb through his catchphrase "Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today!", that is shielding their house utilizing a few creations.
  • Beating the first stage induces a brief conversation in which Phineas expresses his extinguishing relief, only for Ferb to remind him that the monsters will still come back.
  • As shown in the opening to Level 4, Phineas and Ferb are not in the know about their mascot's intervention into the apocalyptic scenario.
  • Level 7 begins to a discussion concerning the wrath of the opponents, pointed out by Ferb to be partially fueled by their flabbergasting resistance. From here onwards, there are no more exposition before the stages, given that all elements have been disclosed at this point.
  • Once the finishing mission is terminated, the brothers excitedly declare that they are finally victorious in procteting their landscape.
  • Unlike in the series, Ferb speaks almost as much as Phineas during the level commentaries in a way of equally distributing the screentime between them along the escapade.
  • While they initialize their exclusive armament, the boys utter phrases openly alluding to quotes from episodes of the show:
  • It is strange for one of the zombie types to be shaped like Phineas, since Doofenshmirtz is apparently not targeting Perry's caretakers. A plausible explanation to these is a malfunction resulting in intended Undead Doofs to deform into triangle beasts lacking pointy noses.
  • Norm Bots technically should not be manufactured in the 1st Dimension, though this is likely excused due to the masterminding Doofenshmirtz probably retaining blueprints to the flexible machines, thus allowing for an enhancement beyond the stock degree.
  • The Doofenshmirtz Clones liberated are presumably a potent retooling of the copying plot without any disfigured aberrations.
  • Assets utilized for the defensive architecture on the swarm barrages include boxes, chairs, desks, chests, drawers, bags, armchairs, sofas, wardrobes, televisions, and replicas of Candace's pink flower bed, all but the latter three altering in coloration.
  • Close to the cessation of a level, it is no longer permitted to erect or erase stationed weaponry in the endangered sector to prevent items being positioned outside of the alloted interval.
  • At the end of each stage, an annotation checklist is showcased containing the number of zombies, robots, and clones defeated, below a mark to celebrate victory. A bonus record is listed following the last endeavor relating Doofenshmirtz's foiling. On the case of a failure, the note advises to do better and not give up.
  • Despite displaying a 10 Star note next to the trash sign, the Zapper actually returns a 5 Shine amount upon being discarded, conforming to the half-price bin standard seen with the rest of the inventions.
  • Firing a special attack with no foes in the screen causes the blast animation to be improperly played, as it gets stuck in the early frames until the ammunition is launched again.
